A Serialized Story of the
Not So Distant Future
March 22, 2005
Part Two
Sam lay in his bed frustrated as all hell. Mom and Robbie were obviously holding out on him, they just kept blathering about him getting better, and pretending not to understand when he asked how long had he been out.
Years? The thought sent stabs of fear into his heart, but judging by Robbie's appearance it was at least 6, but probably more like 15 years! There was no sign of the teenager in Robbie's face any more, his eyes had crows feet already, and his face had a weathered look about it.
Mom on the other hand, didn't look all that different. Her hair was more gray, but she may have stopped dying it over the years, her face was a little more sunken and lined, but not terribly so, Sam guessed that she must be between 55 and 60, which put his estimate now at 5 to 10 years.
Even 5 years would mean his whole youth was stolen from him! He had such a great life, he was in his third year in Brooklyn College, he had a 2004 yellow Mustang, and a girlfriend who - oh shit! Gaby, what happened to Gaby?!
He could see her in his mind's eye. 5' 6", slim and ladylike. Sexy as hell, turning guys heads where ever she went. She was the girl every guy wanted, and Sam had her, or at least he used to.
Where was she? If so many years had passed, he could understand why she may have found someone else, but wouldn't she still come to visit? Sam tried to reach for the phone, but he only succeeded in knocking something off of the table. What the hell had happened to him?!
The nurse came in, different from the earlier one. Sam could see the name Cathy Kirby on her badge. She was in her twenties and pretty cute, but no match for Gabrielle.
"Is everything ok in here?"
Sam made eye contact and tried to say "phone."
"I can call your family for you, if you like." Nurse Kirby walked out the door, and returned after a moment with a post it in her hand.
She punched the numbers in on the keypad, holding the receiver to her ear. "Mrs. Quinn, this is Cathy Kirby from St. Bartholemew's. Oh no, everything is fine. Sam was asking for the phone, I think he wants to speak to you."
Nurse Kirby held the phone up against Sam's ear, Sam was beginning to wish he hadn't started this."Ma?" He managed.
"Yes dear, I'm so happy you called me!" Mrs Quinn said. Her voice was so loud through the phone that it was hurting Sam's ear.
"Ma, wha hattened to Gahey?"
"Robbie? Oh he's out right now, but we'll both be coming to visit you again tomorrow. I love you dear."
"Thanth Ma." Sam didn't have the heart to snap at her, even though he knew that she knew he wasn't asking about Robbie.
He indicated to the nurse that she could hang up the phone, she smiled and placed the "Call" button right by his hand, if he should need anything else.
Gaby obviously wasn't around anymore, Sam tried to remember the last time they were together. His mind went back to the weekend they had driven up to Cape Cod. It was one of his favorite memories, but it definitely wasn't the last time they were together.
He started to piece together memories, there was his job where they had met. They were both salespeople in Macy's, he worked in Men's wear and she was in Jewelery, both of them were in college, but she went to Kingsborough Community College, aka Kingsborough Country Club, while he was in Brooklyn College, a much more respected school.
He relived their first meeting, Sam had been ordered to help bring stock to the Jewelery section. He joked about running off with the boxes and Gabrielle told him that it wasn't worth it, most of the stuff he was delivering was cheap junk.
"And what sort of jewelery would a classy lady such as yourself wear?" Sam asked.
"Oh, well I'd never wear anything less than 18k gold, and of course I prefer diamonds" She teased. "These diamond earrings for example would make a wonderful gift for your girlfriend."
"I'll keep that in mind," Sam said. "Tell me, where would be the best place to take my girlfriend on a date?"
"Well, you'll want to make a BIG impression," Gaby said, "but it should also be a surprise. Girls love surprises you know."
"More work, less talk you two!" It was Robin, the dreaded White Flower manager.
After their shift was over, Sam asked her out, and prepared to max out his credit card to make a big impression. Fortunately, she wasn't quite that vain, although she did have expensive tastes.
The only activity Sam didn't really like was going to the movies with her. It was the typical "chick flick" versus "guy movie" debate, which she always one. The last thing he remembered them comprimising on was that awful movie "Cat Woman."
He knew it would be bad, but he figured any movie where he could stare at Halle Barrie's ass for two hours would at least be entertaining. He couldn't have been more wrong, even worse, Gaby seemed to be enjoying it, so Sam couldn't pass the time by making jokes.
That was it! Sam realized, the last time they were together. They finished the movie, and had planned to go tot he Bay Diner to hang out. Sam remembered getting into the car, but everything just went gray after that. He fell asleep trying to pierce that gray fog.
