A Serialized Story of the
Not So Distant Future

Part Seven
Sam's jaw dropped as he stared at the post-it note his mother had handed him. He looked into her eyes, half expecting to see madness, but his Mom looked as clear and sane as ever.
He made a pen motion while saying: "Well, I guess ten years is a long time, seems like only a few days to me."
Martha handed Sam a pen and he scribbled "How do you know?"
"You should get some rest Sam," she said. "We'll go for a nice walk tomorrow."
"I never did get upstairs, but I guess I'll just sleep on the couch tonight." Sam said.
"I'll get your pillow and blankets dear."
"Do you mind if I turn on the News, I have a lot of catching up to do."
"Oh no, go right ahead."
Sam moved onto the couch and turned on the TV set. He flipped to CNN to CNN (at least that still existed) and watched as the latest headlines came up.
"An army deserter was shot today and two others captured as they tried to cross the border into Canada. The Border guards assumed they were terrorists trying to sneak into the country and shot on sight." The image on the screen was of a twenty foot razor wire fence, cleared of forest on both sides, and two guards leading away two men in handcuffs. It shifted over to their Captain, a man named Rourke.
"The guards were just following standard procedures," He said. "In the middle of the night, we can't afford to take any chances on who might be sneaking into the country."
"Learning anything interesting?" Martha asked as she came in with a pillow and blankets.
"We have razor wire fences on the Canadian border now?" Sam said.
"Oh it was necessary, those Canadians wouldn't do anything about the terrorists coming through their country. Actually, we're building a wall across the entire border." She said sadly.
"How does Canada feel about that?" Sam asked.
"They hate us now, everyone hates us. They're all jealous of our freedom." Martha said very loudly.
The T.V. anchor a rugged looking man with perfectly blow dried hair, going by the name of Kent Clark began reporting on the latest news from Washington:
"President Bush today signed the 'Medical Fraud Protection Act' into law. This new law now limits the damages from medical lawsuits solely to the medical costs incurred by the responsible party."
"President Bush is still in office?" Sam asked.
"No, it's his brother Neil Bush dear, he's in his second term. He won by a landslide both times."
Neil Bush appeared on the screen sounding more like his father than his brother.
"This bill, will limit the damage done by greedy lawyers who have continued to pollute our great country with frivilous lawsuits. We're not denying people their right to sue, or be justly compensated. But asking millions of dollars for pain and suffering from a plaintiff who developed acne is just ludicrous."
"The President was referring of course to the Staci Modd case," Kent Clark said, "the young fashion model who claimed that her career was ruined by the acne scars she developed after taking some perscription Turlex, an anti-depressant."
"This is going to be a long night." Sam said.
"Don't watch too much dear, it'll rot your brain." Martha said slyly.
"I hope there's some Star Trek reruns on somewhere." Sam said.
As his Mom went up to bed, Sam settled in and watched some more news. His lower back and legs were aching, but he was determined not to use the pain pills the doctor had prescribed. He wanted to feel every bit of his body.
The news had gone on to talk about the international situation. Apparently the cold war was back in full gear, only with China as the main opponent instead of Russia. It seemed like there was still a standoff against North Korea, which was now allied with the Chinese.
Sam had enough news for a bit, and began flipping channels. There were a lot of movies he didn't recognize, or care about at this moment. The Cartoon Network was still there, playing old Family Guy episodes, and the History Channel was still showing WWII footage. Sam finally found the Sci-Fi network and fell asleep watching an episode of Quantum Leap.
He found himself at the scene of the accident again. Paramedics had
arrived, and somehow managed to get the driver's side door open on his upside down car.
"He's suffered serious head trauma, but he's still breathing." The Paramedic said as they did their best to carefully transfer him to the stretcher."
"How many passengers are there?" The second Paramedic asked.
"There's a girl in the front seat, she's a complete mess."
"That's no way to talk about a lady." The voice made Sam jump again, but he didn't wake up this time.
He spun around and saw Gaby standing behind him.
"GABY!" He threw his arms around her and held on for dear life, she returned his hug and laughed. "Easy lover, we've only been apart for a few days."
"Days? What about the ten years?"
"You think you were sleeping all that time?" She smiled. "We've been keeping you very busy."
"We who?" Sam asked.
"Sorry, that's classified. If I tell you, I'd have to kill you."
"Wouldn't that mean I could stay with you forever?"
"In time lover, but for now you're needed on Earth."
"Gaby, I'm sorry." Sam said, as her mangled body was being covered up by the paramedics.
"For what?"
"For this, for getting you killed. I remember now, I shouldn't have been speeding."
"Relax silly, I chose to go. I wanted a life in which I was spoiled and happy, I never planned on growing up or old."
"But, what about us?"
"There's more to me than meets the eye dear Sam. You'll find out in time. Just don't start punishing yourself, guilt and self blame only slow down the process."
"What process?"
She kissed him softly on the lips, "you'll see."
The scene faded and Sam drifted back to sleep.
