Chapter
13
A Serialized Story of the
Not So Distant Future
April 8, 2005
Part Fifteen
Sam went to bed angry and depressed that night, he'd never paid much attention to politics, the whole subject usually left a bad taste in his mouth; but this was so far out of whack! How could the world have changed so much?
When sleep finally came, Sam found himself running across a field in the dark. There was a full moon above, illuminating his way, but it was too bright. The cursed Nazi's would have him for sure. Where was Paul damn it! Paul was supposed to be meeting him.
Shouts and the barking of dogs could be heard in the distance, the wind was at his back so his scent would be harder to pick up. Blood pounded in Sam's head as he headed towards an abandoned farmhouse. He knew the Nazi's would check there first, but he hoped to God that Paul was waiting there.
"Sonya!" Sam wheeled, the voice had come from an old barn. He momentarily realized that Sonya was his name and that he was a woman, but none of that mattered right now."
"Paul! Damn you, what happened?!" She threw her arms around him and they held each other for the briefest moments.
"The Germans intercepted your message, they had patrols everywhere."
"Memorize these coordinates" Sonya/Sam said reading off a string of numbers. "It is the location of their rocket range, they are developing new weapons there."
"What sort of weapon?"
"I don't know, I only know that they tested it in at Rugen, our man who saw it went blind."
"Now go, the dogs already have my scent!"
"No," Paul said. "We leave together."
"Get out of here," she said. "This information must get through."
Paul looked pained, he handed her his pistol. "Take this, at least."
"I will see you again, lover." Sonya/Sam said.
Paul took off around the back of the barn and was gone. Sonya waited until the Nazis were close enough, and fired one shot, in their direction. This created momenatry confusion as they took a more defensive stance. Sonya used this time to flee in a different direction.
Exhaustion was starting to take it's toll however, and Sonya barely got another half mile before the dogs were on her. She shot one, and the rest scattered, but it was over. A bullet pierced her leg, causing her to fall headlong. Rough hands lifted her, binding her wrists and ankles, she could see the crisp uniform of the Gestapo in the moonlight.
"Sonya Wachowski you are under arrest for espionage." The officer pronounced officially with a certain measure of glee.
Sonya briefly wished she had used that last bullet on herself, but it wasn't her nature. As the officer radioed in for a truck to come and pick them up, Sam felt the world around him fading, and found himself standing on the deck of the Staten Island Ferry. He wasn't surprised to see Gaby next to him.
"What was that?" He asked.
"Karma dude, karma." Gaby said in her deepest voice. "Last time around, I had to let you die."
"That was real? You were Paul and I was Sonya?"
"We were part of the the Polish resistance, working for the DOE."
"DOE?"
"Part of the British Secret Service. The coordinates we carried were one of the Nazi's atomic bomb test sites. Once they realized what sort of power they were dealing with, they made an all out attempt to keep it under wraps. Fortunately, they failed."
"What does this have to do with us?" Sam asked.
"We're adventure junkies," she joked. "We both like glamorous, dramatic lives. As Sonya last time, you chose to keep working from the non physical level, just as I am this time."
"So what, we come back every few years to save the world?"
"Not always, but past life memories often align with the life you're experiencing now."
"Mm hmm." Despite the vividness of the experience, Sam was still a little skeptical about past lives. "So why do you know all this stuff and I don't?"
"I'm dead, you're not. I have a wider access to certain vibratory states which you don't, at least not fully. Just like you have access to the physical plane of Earth in a manner that I no longer do. Anyway," She said, pulling him in for a quick kiss. "It's time you met the others."
"Others?"
She lifted Sam, and the two of them soared off the ferry and up into the torch of the Statue of Liberty. Inside was a group of total strangers, except for someone Sam had seen on TV.
She stood well over six feet tall, although the high heels were certainly adding to her stature. She wore a dark maroon dress, which buttoned up to her neck, a scarf covered her adam's apple. There was no mistaking the bones in her face or the size of her hands though, this was clearly a man.
"Welcome to Chapter 13," said Madam Zeba, in a voice most deep and ominous.
